Wiley’s Tavern is a popular bar any day of the week, but I never expected it to have bands here. It’s rather large for a bar, but small; to hold a concert. They also made the mistake of having it a 21+ show, instead of all ages. Doors opened at seven, and the first band started at around eight-thirty. The night’s line up started with Core, Angry Room, Foley, and finished with New Medicine. This would be my third time seeing New Medicine and Core, and my second time seeing Foley, who actually opened for New Medicine the last time they were here at Rookie’s with Art of Dying. As seven approached, people started to show up, finding seats and ordering beer and food. I knew there weren’t going to be very many people, and not because of the venue, but because the show wasn’t advertized except for one local facebook page, Bands In Town webside, and New Medicine’s website. However, where was a pretty good turn out so far.

The lgiths turned down and the stage was set as Core gets ready. They open their set with one of my favorite songs “Hate Me Harder.” The band themselves sounded great, but the accoustics in Wiley’s were not set up for loud music. The crowd seemed pretty tought to impress, everyone was still seated and drinking, the disadvantage of being a 21+ show. If it were any other place, they would be a hit, just like they were at the Vault in Sioux Falls, and at RockFest in Aberdeen. After a few more songs, the crowd started moving in their seats, but were being shy about going to the stage. Core finished their set with “Shatterproof” and began tearing down. Eventhough they killed their performance, everyone was more into talking and drinking. Hopefully when New Medicine comes they will either be awake or drunk enough to realize they are at a rock show.

During Angry Room’s set change, I sat down with Adam and Jeremy of Core for an interview. Core originated ten years ago in Spearfish, SD. They have been touring the midwest and have two albums out, with one in the making called “Ugly October.” Why the strange album title? “It’s in honor of a friend that died last October,” says Jeremy. Anything planned for the winter? “Just recording the new album, which we are hoping to have ready by the end of the year or January.”

Angry Room was the only band of the night that I haven’t seen or heard of before, so they had a lot to prove to win me over, along with the incredibly tough crowd. They started the set with “Ocean” and I was instantly a fan. The incredible rhythm from the drums and the fast shreds of the guitar got people to actually stand and gather in small groups by the stage. “Ride” was their third song, and it was much different than the first two with a sharper sound from the drums. By this time the small groups formed together to cover most of the dance floor, all moving with the music. Due to technical issues, their set was cut short with only five songs. Howerver, that was all it took to win over the crowd, giving them loud cheers. Angry Room closed the performance with their new song “Fighting For Nothing”, and left the crowd eagar for more.

Antry Room is from Minnesota, have been togheer for almost two years, and have one OP, which is actually produced by Ryan of New Medicine. This tour is also their first ever tour, and they are excited about the oppertuinty. I asked them if they could pick anyone to tour with, who would it be? Jeremy picked Motely Crue, Dan said Tool, Incubus, and 10 Years, and Zanny said Kiss, Avenged Sevenfold, and Rush. That would make one hell of a show, pardon my language. Winter plans? “We have twelve songs we want to produce for a full-length album.” I will be there to buy it the day it releases. A tour with Core to come back to Sioux Falls is being arranged also. I encourage anyone in the area to come check out thses two bands. Not only great people, but raw talent and amazing performers.

Following Angry Room’s outstanding performance were the infamous locals Foley. The first timet hey opened for New Medicine, they pumped up the crowd really well, and I knew right away this show was no diferent. As soon as Ryan spoke the crowd gathered close, and grew three times as much in the last half hour. Foley opened with “Attempted Manslaughter” and many poeple knew the song and began singing. The guys definatly had a blast toying and teasing the crowd. Foley continued to get more rowdy and had a lot of fun. When they played thier last song “Tonight”, they did a sing-a-long with the lyrics “It’s ok, I’m not ok”, and the venue accoed with voices. Foley did an extremely good job in pumpig up the crowd. New Medicine did the right thing in making the line-up the way they did.

Finally, it was the moment everyone was waiting for. New Medicine took the stage, and everyone in the building was standing and pushing towards the stage. New Medicine opened the set with “End of the World”, and immediatly had the crowd excited and singing and dancing. This was New Medicine’s first headlinging tour, and it was rather hard to tell. These boys had so much energy and were so loud I’m suprised the windows didn’t break. After playing the heart-wrenching song “Little Sister”, written for Jake’s sister that died from SIDS, and later the fun move-your-body song “The Takeover”, it was time to tease the crowd. A girl in the front knew what was next because she could see their set list, so they added the cover “Fight For Your Right” and the venue erupted with voices and cheers. New Medicine ended their first headlining set with “Race U 2 The Bottom”, and when it came time to chug their beer, the crowd joined in. They did an outstanding job, and the crowd would agree.

I was lucky enough to be able to sit down with Jake and Brady of New Medicine before they went on stage. I asked how this tour and set were going to differ from the others. “We aded two new singles for our new record coming out in the spring of 2013.” The two songs were “Spit It Out” and “Life Like This”. For this winter, they planon doing one more tour before the end of the year, bout wouldn’t tell me who. “It’s a secret” says Jake. But for now they are starting their next tour with Three Days Grace in Kansas.

Despite the crowd being quiet in the beginning, New Medicine showed up to liven everyone up., eventhough for me the top performers of the night were Angry Room, not because they were new, but because they loved what they did and they showed it, both on and off the stage  Jake said “Hell yeah South Dakota, you guys sure know how to rock on a Wednesday.” Actually, it’s like this anytime a popular band comes to town, not just on a Wednesday! So, the next time you hear New Medicine, crack open a beer with your buddies and race them to the bottom.
