Memories. A good concert is fun, but a great concert will bring back happy memories. Third Eye Blind reminded a nearly sold out Orpheum Theater what those happy memories were. While the band may not be in the forefront of everyone’s mind today, their live performances continue to remind us why they were one of THE definitive 90s bands. Every fan in attendance this evening had a memory to associate with Third Eye Blind’s music, and the band used those memories to enhance a performance of nearly 2 hours. Their 3 act set touched on every album the band has released, with the second act as an intimate acoustic sit down with the crowd.
It had been almost 25 years to the day since my first time seeing the band live, and while they may have flown under my radar, the band’s fan-base was anything but placid this evening. A few thousand seated fans in attendance couldn’t help but jump to their feet once the house lights dimmed and the opening chords of “Can You Take Me” were played.
I’m ashamed to admit that I had written the band off as a “one hit wonder” from the 1990’s. While my musical tastes have taken a sharp turn into the Alternative and Metalcore genres over the past few decades, tonight’s show gave me a new appreciation for the band that I used to blast at full volume while cruising around the streets of pre-Slipknot era Des Moines.
