Shriek; Wye Oak

Even when separated by thousands of miles, wherever Baltimore natives Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack are guided by their muses, the finished product will be ethereal and inspiring.  Despite it’s name, Shriek is full of aural atmosphere. Each track on the band’s 5th full length release builds on the previous track and creates a vivid sonic landscape.
What really impresses me about Shriek is that this album was written and recorded without a single guitar string being played. Wasner and Stack merge multiple genres on Shriek. Wasner’s soothing voice couples effortlessly with the indie-rock tones that the band combines with shades of pop and an electronic element.
As a whole, Wye Oak’s music has continued to evolve and synergize over their career’s musical journey. Wasner’s vocals, while pitch perfect, are laced with undertones of a sense of urgency. The duo use each track to build off of their unique style. Wasner’s voice, at times, seems to be touched by a hint of inspiration from the likes of Sarah McLachlan and Amy Lee.
Shriek, listened to in it’s entirety, is perfect mood music and will make a brilliant addition to everyone’s music collection. Personally, I’m thrilled for the chance to hear these tracks played live on the band’s upcoming tour.
