Summer 2015 just lost one of its biggest tickets. The Man of Steel sequel we all insist on referring to as Batman vs. Superman (even though that will probably not be its final name) has been moved out of its original July 17, 2015 release date and rescheduled for May 2016.
The surprising move may or may not have anything to do with star Ben Affleck recently suffering a leg injury that threatened to delay the start of filming for six weeks. However, Warner Bros. insists that the release shift has more to do with the need of director Zack Snyder to get the script in some kind of fighting shape, “allowing the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story.”
The July release date now belongs to Pan, Joe Wright’s Peter Pan origin story rumored to star Hugh Jackman. Since Warners has the future of their superhero movie properties riding on the success of Batman Vs. Superman, it would behoove them to wait until it is ready to shoot without complications. Rather than get swamped in the overflowing summer of 2015, the DC Comics super-sequel will now open mere weeks before X-Men: Apocalypse and a good month before The Amazing Spider-Man 3, although those releases could change as well.
Taste the rainbow of corporate propaganda from the Warner Bros. official press release.
“We know that there is already great anticipation building for the next Super Hero film from Zack Snyder, and we are equally eager to see what he has in store for Superman and Batman as they share the big screen for the first time ever. The summer release corridor is also perfect for Joe Wright’s ambitious new Peter Pan adventure, reimagining the ageless story of the beloved and forever-young hero for audiences worldwide.”
Batman Vs. Superman will now open on May 6, 2016…barring any further unforeseen circumstances, of course. The sequel will star Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent, Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince, as well as Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane.
