UK progressive metal outfit AKKADIAN return with “Brave New World,” the latest taste of their forthcoming Elsewhere EP. The track follows “Elsewhere,” the EP’s lead single and title track, continuing the band’s rollout while offering another glimpse into the increasingly expansive sound they’re bringing to the new release.
Built around Max Sylvestre and Harry Newberry’s thick, down-tuned riffs and Aaron Wright’s relentless rhythmic pulse, “Brave New World” wastes little time establishing its weight. There’s an almost hypnotic quality underneath the aggression, with the band allowing Chris Kontos’ groove to breathe before tightening the screws with bursts of controlled chaos. Danny Thurston’s vocals shift between commanding roars and more atmospheric passages, giving the track a sense of movement rather than simply relying on sheer heaviness.
What continues to separate AKKADIAN from many of their contemporaries is the atmosphere surrounding those riffs. There are shades of Gojira and Tool within the band’s musical DNA, but “Brave New World” never feels like an exercise in imitation. Instead, those influences are filtered through AKKADIAN’s increasingly recognizable combination of psychedelic textures, progressive songwriting, and punishing groove.
Heavy without sacrificing atmosphere and technical without becoming unnecessarily complicated, “Brave New World” feels like another significant step forward for AKKADIAN. Following the foundation laid by “Elsewhere,” the track further builds anticipation for the EP’s release and suggests AKKADIAN aren’t simply doubling down on what already works, they’re continuing to expand the boundaries of their sound.
