Northern Invasion Artist Spotlight: Butcher Babies

Currently on tour in support of their sophomore release, Take It Like A Man, Butcher Babies will be 1 of only 4 female fronted bands currently on the docket to thrash the crowd at Northern Invasion’s 2 day experience.
I got the chance to see Butcher Babies in January of 2015 when they toured with Black Label Society and Hatebreed. I can tell you with all certainty that these women are every bit as brutal and visceral on stage as their male counterparts. While the metal and rocks genres are dominated by testosterone driver bands, Butcher Babies are the kick in the face that the scene needs to remind us that women rock just as hard as the men do.

Hailing from the City Of Angels, the BUTCHER BABIES offer redemption from the overplayed underground, exorcising demons with a visceral sound matched only in scope by their explosive stage show. Frontwomen Carla Harvey and Heidi Shepherd, guitarist Henry Flury [Amen], bassist Jason Klein [Azdachao] and drummer Chris Warner [Scars of Tomorrow] juxtapose brutal, aggressive riffs with beautiful melodies that wail with anguish and hope for redemption.

The band signed a worldwide deal with Century Media Records in December 2012, and a month later hit the road with Marilyn Manson on what proved to be one of the new year’s most talked about tours. The run was a return to form for Manson and a call to arms for the BUTCHER BABIES, who honed their razor-sharp riffs and soul-searing vocals in front of live audiences as a source of manic pre-production. Only days after wrapping the tour in the City Of Sin, the band was in an L.A. studio with producer Josh Wilbur [Gojira, Lamb Of God, Hatebreed] recording the debut album that has the metal community buzzing.

The band released their own comic book at Comic Con, illustrated by Carla in 2011. In 2012 they released their debut album GOLIATH via Century Media Records, produced by Josh Wilbur (Gojira, Lamb of God, Hatebreed). The band hit the road with Danzig, Rob Zombie, In This Moment, Gwar ; played music fests including Knottiest, Louder Than Life, Aftershock, and Welcome to Rockville and appeared in the film Alleluia! : The Devil’s Carnival.

On August 21, 2015 Butcher Babies released their highly anticipated follow up, TAKE IT LIKE A MAN and released a music video for each song on the album. Carla Harvey said: “The majority of the album is very aggressive thrash metal. On this album, we wanted to go back to our roots, which were aggressive thrash, and ninety percent of the album is that.” Added co-vocalist Heidi Shepherd: “But the thing is we’re not ever gonna sacrifice who we are for that. What we’re attempting with this is to bring back the metal and the aggression into radio. So we kind of… We merged the two worlds. And radio stations who have heard it so far are impressed and we’re very excited for that.”

Did You Know? Carla Harvey took a break from the entertainment world to earn a degree in Mortuary Science from California’s Cypress College, and worked as an embalmer and funeral director before forming the Butcher Babies and pursuing her life long dream of being a touring musician.
As for Harvey’s musical influences, she said, “As a biracial kid growing up in the Detroit area, I got a lot of shit for loving hard rock and metal, and seeing musicians that were also African American playing the music I loved made me strong enough to say, ‘Fuck you, I’m going to like what I want.'”
