Being a dude and not having any kids, I got the chance to spend this Mother’s day in a non-traditional way. This Mother’s day, I got to celebrate it with a room full of sweaty metal heads to see a band from Sweden. Avatar and a group of friends played that lovely Sunday in Omaha, NE, and wanna know the best part? I walked there so you can say I was pretty excited to cover this show.
The show was great in a way that the crowd was out in full for this show which was not what I expected. Not only that, but they were a very lively group. I will not lie that metal isn’t the first thing that I pop in the CD player when I want a jam but it does hold a special place in my heart, that is why I asked 15 year old Lonnie, aka Aaron to help me write this review. Now I know what you are thinking, “Lonnie you have gone round the bend!” But let me assure you Aaron will be able to tell you this story a whole lot better than I can. So I pass it over to him.
So the show started at the Underground pretty early which is always great. Gives the bands a decent set and still make it home in time to get a lot of shut eye. After a few locals got off the stage, thankfully, saying this with as much respect as possible, they all played pretty small sets, Righteous Vendetta hit the stage. I must say they were pretty amazing and I can only say good things about them but I must disappoint all you kiddies who so like poppy metal, this is not who this review is about.
Avatar hit the stage with some things I can say I haven’t seen before, and I enjoyed them. For starters, their road crew was dressed up in traditional bellhop costumes. But this only added to the ambiance that is Avatar. The best way to explain Avatar from Sweden is they are a metal band that specializes in a cerebral touch that most metal bands from abroad do but… taking it to the next level. They come out in an almost circus atmosphere, a chunk of fear added with a smattering of kid like wonder. That feeling you would get from the first snow of the year, playing in the rain, or riding your first roller coaster.
Not only was their appearance something that makes the show worth watching, they brought it. Strong, aggressive, and in the pocket the whole show. Now the thing I haven’t got to experience much lately with all the growing up and starting to like 2 minute songs was the build that they were able to do with their songs such as “Hail the Apocalypse” and “Bloody Angel” off their new record Hail the Apocalypse. Which you can check out on their website www.avatarmetal.com. Now enough of the plugging, let’s get back to the show. It was electric. The crowd was great. Full of emotion and full of energy, but if it wasn’t for Avatar, they wouldn’t be there to do so. All and all I think the show was great and if they ever come back to town, I will be there and if they come to your town, you are a damn fool not to be there.
Now with all that said I will pass it back to Lonnie to let him finish this up. Later kids.
Thank you for reading this review of the show. If you want to know more about Avatar I would highly recommend that you check out their website avatarmetal.com and pick up their latest album and see some of their videos. So until next time, have fun and dance your butts off!Lonnie Elder
