Playing in a new town is tough. Whether you have a big name or not, playing a show where no one knows you can be a task all in its own. Now let’s ramp that up and try playing in another country. But that is exactly what Syd Arthur did May 28th in Omaha, NE. Normally; a Wednesday in Omaha is not that exciting so the mood was already lacking enthusiasm. Upon arriving at the Waiting Room, I was shocked to see the room full of loyal Syd Arthur and The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger fans brought a revitalized attitude to the night.

Syd Arthur hit the stage and instantly you could tell they were going to be a master of their craft by the way they presented themselves. There was a vibe of electricity that struck the chords of everyone in the room as the first notes rang over the crowd. As “Garden of Time” played from their new album, Sound Mirror, pumping from the speakers to cover the crowd with a blanket of sound, I could feel myself letting my guard down and falling into the musical adventure that the crowd was ready to be part of.

Track after track of guitar expertise, smooth rhythm from the low tones of the bass, and the diversity of the keyboards and mandolin made you want to just soak in the grooves. With very little banter between songs or wasted time as bands tend to do, they would just roll from one song straight to the next song which meant more tracks for the crowd to enjoy. With a national tour going on until the 14th of June, if you get a chance and want to see some truly special musical proficiency, go see Syd Arthur. If they are not coming to your town, pick up a copy of Sound Mirror at your local record shop.
