Anna Paquin’s Rogue Cut From ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’

SDCC 2013: X-Men: Days Of Future Past panel: Anna Paquin 02

If you were looking forward to seeing True Blood star Anna Paquin reprise her role as Rogue in the upcoming X-Men: First Class sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past, there’s a bit of bad news.

As it turns out, Paquin only shot one scene for the movie—a rescue sequence featuring Rogue, Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), and best buddies Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Professor X (Patrick Stewart). In the end, director Bryan Singer simply had too much good content (never a bad thing), and had to sacrifice the scene.

Singer explained:

“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous. It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”

Paquin was on hand at this past summer’s San Diego Comic-Con as the massive collection of actors from Singer’s previous X-Men flicks and the prequel movie First Class gathered to promote the latest entry in the series.

But Singer was sure to praise Paquin’s work and assure people she understood the decision:

“She did a fantastic job. She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat.

She completely understood. It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve.”

X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released on May 23, 2014.
