Colin Meloy  has recorded five songs from The Kinks’ early works for the latest in his series of cover EPs. See below for the track listing.

Today NPR Music’s “All Songs Considered” premieres Meloy’s acoustic version of “Do You Remember Walter?” – a song that appeared on 1968’s The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, widely regarded as one of the English band’s most influential albums. “I’d always appreciated the genius of Ray Davies, but I’d never actually submersed myself and bothered to learn the songs,” said Meloy. “These are good songs, folks. Really good songs. Bitter and wicked smart. And Dave Davies is an unsung hero.” Meloy’s version of “Do You Remember Walter?” is now streaming here.

Meloy, who is the frontman and songwriter for The Decemberists, will kick off his first solo run in five years at Town Hall in New York City on November 1. He’ll be playing songs from throughout his career, debuting new material and tossing an occasional Kinks song into the mix. Tickets are on sale now for the outing, which will include shows at the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, DC (November 5) and Park West in Chicago (November 11). The West Coast leg will launch on January 16 at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. Eleanor Friedberger will be the supporting act for the November 2013 shows and John Roderick will support on the January 2014 dates. See below for itinerary. In the years following Meloy’s last solo outing, which coincided with the release ofhisfirst-ever live collection, Colin Meloy Sings Live! (2008),The Decemberists have released two full-length albums, an EP and a live collection. The King Is Dead debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2011 and its first single, “Down By The Water,” received two GRAMMY® nominations. Meloy has recently been devoting time to The Wildwood Chronicles, a series of novels for children that he created with his wife, illustrator Carson Ellis. The series debut, Wildwood (Balzer + Bray, 2011), was praised by The New York Times as a “richly satisfying weave of reality and fantasy.” Under Wildwood followed in 2012, and like the first, became a New York Times bestseller. Wildwood Imperium, the third volume, will be published February 4, 2014.
