Heralded as Otep Shamaya’s last release, Hydra is a visceral tale of tragedy, deceit and destiny that would make Shakespeare shudder.
Shamaya found her musical soulmate in Iowa native, and founder of the now defuct metal band Destrophy, Ari Mihalopoulos. With the help of Mihalopoulos, Otep once agains raises the bar for the brand of metal that she helped to craft over a decade ago.
Hydra is laced with venomous whimpers and gutteral growls, using Shamaya’s unique brand of poetry to bridge the spaces between some of the heaviest tracks this amazing woman has ever released. While Otep’s poetry is potent throughout Hydra, it’s tracks like Hag, Feral Game and Blowtorch Nightlight that push the limits of the albums brutal aural assault, leaving to question what’s next for this brilliant woman that so many of us refer to as our “voice in the darkness”.
